Looking Beyond the Teeth

Straight teeth are the visible result of orthodontics, but they aren't the whole story. How a child's jaws grow, how the face develops, and how well a child breathes are all connected, and easy to overlook if you're only looking at alignment. Airway-friendly orthodontics means evaluating that bigger picture: not just where the teeth sit today, but how the structures around them are developing and whether breathing is part of the conversation.

The shape of the jaws and palate directly affects the space available for the airway. A narrow upper jaw, a high palate, or a recessed lower jaw can be linked to mouth breathing, disrupted sleep, and snoring in children, and the same growth we work with to align teeth shapes those structures. At Tsai Orthodontics, we believe that orthodontists play a valuable role on the team that could help catch these problems early.

We evaluate facial growth alongside the teeth, using 3D imaging where warranted. If we see signs pointing toward airway concerns, we'll talk through what we're observing and, when appropriate, coordinate with your physician, an ENT, or a sleep specialist. For qualifying cases, adult expansion using mini-screw assisted expanders may be a part of your overall treatment plan.

An honest word on scope

Airway is a topic with a lot of strong claims attached, some better supported than others. We approach it evidence-first: we'll tell you what orthodontic treatment can realistically influence, what it can't, and when a concern is better handled by another specialist. We won't overpromise that straightening teeth fixes sleep problems, the relationship is real but more nuanced than that, and you deserve a measured assessment rather than a sales pitch.
